Member Roles

Here you can find details of the definitions, qualifications, and responsibilities of the various levels of IU-EMS member roles.  For detailed information on medical capabilities and limits, see the scope of practice page.  Select one of the following

member types to learn more about that role:

Officers        Supervisors        EMTs        First Aiders

Scope of Practice        Officer Positions

 Officers

 Executive Board

Executive board members practice full governing authority within IU-EMS.  The executive board consists of

the president, the vice president, and various directors charged with overseeing individual aspects of

IU-EMS' operation.  Each officer position carries comprehensive responsibilities and duties.  All executive

board officers must be EMTs with extensive experience both in patient care and in IU-EMS' operation, and

must possess additional stated skills, as well.

In addition to maintaining existing policies and protocols, executive board officers are also able to propose,

vote on, and implement new measures using parliamentary procedure according to the IU-EMS constitution.

 Non-Executive Officers

Non-executive officers are similar to executive board members, except that they do not carry a vote on

executive board measures.  Non-executive officer positions also carry comprehensive responsibilities and

duties.  All non-executive officers must possess extensive experience with IU-EMS' operation, as well as

 additional stated skills.

The president, the vice president, and all other officers hold the highest level of logistical authority at all

IU-EMS events, in the stated order.

For more detailed information on the responsibilities and requirements of each officer position, visit the

 officer positions page.

 Supervisors

Supervisors are previous officers or are EMTs trained by the IU-EMS officers to be supervisors.  They

are charged with providing logistical leadership at IU-EMS events in lieu of the officers.  Supervisors are

utilized for events at which an officer is not present, or for large events with several shifts or teams, such as

the IU Dance Marathon and the IUSF Little 500 races.  Supervisors must be EMTs with extensive experience

both in patient care and in IU-EMS' operation.  They carry the highest level of logistical authority at all IU-EMS

 events under the officers.

 EMTs

EMTs are IU-EMS' primary emergency medical care providers.  EMTs complete thorough training

and examination mandated by the federal and state government to ensure delivery of quality patient BLS

(basic life support) care.  All IU-EMS EMTs must hold current Indiana EMT certification.  At most events,

especially at the daily IUSF Little 500 season practices, there are no officers or supervisors present, and

EMTs carry the highest level of both logistical and medical authority.  They are responsible for providing

comprehensive patient care in any situation that they may encounter, including performing full patient

 assessments and making treatment decisions.

 First AIders

First Aiders are an essential component of the IU-EMS system.  First Aiders complete thorough training

and examination mandated by the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association to ensure

delivery of quality first aid patient care.  They assess and treat many minor illnesses and injuries on their own,

and assist EMTs in the assessment and treatment of more significant illnesses and injuries that require BLS

patient care.  The First Aider position is a useful entry-level position for members to gain exposure to and

experience in the field, from which they can move up to the EMT level and beyond if they wish.
