EMT-Basic State Practical Skills

Examination Students

IU-EMS hosts an EMT-Basic state practical skills examination each semester, primarily for students in Indiana University's EMT-Basic course, HPER-H404, although the examination is open to other candidates, as well.  Upon completing the course, the students are required to complete a written and a practical skills examination before receiving their certification.  The practical skills examination consists of seven stations, and strict regulations are followed during testing.  For more information, view pictures of our exam in our gallery.  Select one of the following topics to learn more:

 Examination Procedure

You must check in absolutely no later than 7:45 a.m., although it is recommended to check in by 7:30 a.m.

The state  proctor will give you additional information before the examination.  You must remain in the waiting

room while not testing at a station, except to use the restroom.  You may bring your own materials, such as the

state skills sheets, to study only in the waiting room.  You are responsible for bringing or ordering your own

lunch, for which you will be given one hour, starting approximately between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

 Skills

  • Medical Patient Assessment

  • Trauma Patient Assessment

  • Supine Spinal Immobilization (Longboard/Backboard)

  • Seated Spinal Immobilization (KED)

  • Dual Lumen Airway Device (Combi-Tube)

  • Cardiac Arrest Management and AED Administration

  • One Random from the Following:

    • Upper Airway Adjuncts (OPA/NPA) and Airway Suctioning

    • Mouth-to-Mask Resuscitation with Supplemental Oxygen

    • Oxygen Administration

    • Bleeding Control and Shock Management

    • Long Bone Injury Immobilization (Splinting)

    • Joint Injury Immobilization (Splinting)

    • Traction Splinting (For Broken Femur)

 Payment

If you have not already paid, please pay by check or cash when you check in.  If paying by check, make it

payable to IU-EMS.  The cost for the examination is as follows:

  • IU-EMS Members:  $65.00

  • Non-Members:  $80.00

  • Individual Stations:  $15.00 (only for individuals retesting specific stations and not taking the             entire examination)

 Tips

  • Thoroughly practice all of the skills in the weeks before the examination until you are completely comfortable with each one.  Visit the practical skills page to download copies of the skill sheets and to read advice and tips on each of the skills.

  • If you did not take Indiana University's EMT-Basic course, HPER-H404, consider bringing your own equipment that you are familiar with, such as cervical collars or suction devices.  Remember that the state proctor must inspect all personal equipment before the examination.

  • Get at least eight hours of sleep the night before the examination.

  • Eat a sufficiently sized and nutritious breakfast on the day of the examination.

  • Arrive promptly at 7:30 a.m.

  • Be prepared to pay by cash or check if you have not already paid.

  • Bring your own state skills sheets to periodically review the material and keep it fresh in your mind.

  • Do not cram or attempt to temporarily memorize the steps.

  • Wear gloves into each station to ensure that you receive credit for appropriate body substance isolation precautions (gloves will be provided).

  • While testing, take a short time to relax and gather your thoughts if necessary.  You are always allowed to go back over steps that you have already performed, and can do some steps in a different order than that given on the state skills sheet.  Just remember that all of the stations have a time limit.

  • Most importantly, relax!  Do whatever works best for you in order to avoid becoming stressed.  Consider bringing a book, magazine, or handheld game to use in the waiting room if it is necessary for you to remain relaxed.

 Obtaining your Certification

The state EMS commission will send your certification card via postal mail after you successfully complete

both state examinations and submit the appropriate application materials.  However, your certification

number should be available on this page (new window) a few days after you successfully complete the second

of the two state examinations.  Once you obtain your certification number, you are licensed to practice as an

EMT-Basic in Indiana.  You do not need to wait to receive your certification card via postal mail.
