University Circle of Life's Mini-Marathon, started in 2006, is
rapidly gaining in
popularity. Participants follow a 13-mile course through the IU campus and
the surrounding area.

IU-EMS' Role: IU-EMS will
have personnel stationed at the starting and finishing areas as
well as at
"hydration stations" throughout the course. We will watch for runners who need assistance and
treat
any runners who approach us.

Description: The Coach Hep
Cancer Challenge, in honor of former IU head football coach and
cancer
victim
Terry Hoeppner, consists of multiple running and cycling races.
Participants can choose from a
two-kilometer or five-kilometer walk/run, a forty-kilometer or
one hundred-kilometer cycle, or a
combination of the forty-kilometer cycle and the five-kilometer
run. All events begin and finish at Bill
Armstrong Stadium, with the cycling races stretching through
Monroe and Morgan Counties.
IU-EMS' Role: IU-EMS will
have personnel stationed at two rest stations along the running
and cycling
routes. We will watch for runners or cyclists who need assistance and
treat any runners or cyclists who
approach us.
BHAS (Bloomington Hospital Ambulance Service) will have an
ambulance stationed at
Bill Armstrong Stadium.

Dance Marathon
Location: HPER Gymnasium
Check-In: Treatment Tent
Description: Indiana University Dance Marathon is a
36-hour fundraising event for the Ryan White
Infectious Disease Center at Riley Children's Hospital in
Indianapolis. Participants, usually in teams,
pledge funds prior to the event, then stay awake for the entire
36 hours while remaining in the HPER
(School of Health, Physical Education, and Recrations) gymnasium. There is a continuation of live
music
throughout the event, as well as food, games, prizes, and a variety of special events for the
participants'
entertainment. The marathon is a distinguished model for others around the nation. For

IU-EMS' Role: IU-EMS will set up a triage table for
initial patient contact and a private treatment area
for both participants and workers. We will also have
EMT-First
Aider pairs roaming the gymnasium,
hallway, and locker rooms
to watch for participants that need assistance and will treat
any that
approach us.

State Practical Skills Examination
Location: Ballantine Hall

Volunteer Room (Signs will be Posted)
Description:
IU-EMS hosts an Indiana EMT-Basic state practical skills
examination, one of two
examinations required to obtain Indiana EMT-Basic certification, at
the beginning and end of the spring
semester. This examination tests the ability of candidates
to complete a series of skills, including
patient assessment, backboarding, and others. While the
majority of candidates come from the
university's EMT-Basic course, the examination is open to anyone who
has successfully completed an
approved Indiana EMT-Basic course. For more information, visit

IU-EMS' Role: IU-EMS
members can volunteer to be examiners (must be
EMTs), station assistants
(must be CPR certified), or
simulated patients. Patients will be subject to such
things as physical
examinations and being placed in a cervical collar and unto a
backboard. Volunteering to be a patient
is highly recommended for those individuals who plan to take the
examination at a later date in order to
gain an understanding of how the examination functions.

Location: Dunn Meadow
Description: IU-EMS hosts
its In an Instant mock vehicle accident in an
effort to help encourage the
university's students to make responsible
decisions during Little 500 week, which is unfortunately
notorious for increased student parties and
alcohol consumption. IU-EMS works with BFD
(Bloomington Fire Department), BHAS (Bloomington Hospital
Ambulance Service), BPD
(Bloomington Police Department), IUPD (IU Police Department),
and LifeLine emergency medical
helicopter service to simulate a realistic fatal
accident with multiple traumatic injuries. For

IU-EMS' Role: IU-EMS
officers are responsible for planning and managing the event.
Members may
volunteer to be simulated patients, but opportunities are
limited. Patients will be extensively moulaged
and will be placed in a fully simulated emergency situation,
including vehicle extrication, oxygen mask
administration, being placed in a cervical collar and unto a
backboard, and being transported in an
ambulance or medical helicopter.

Description: Indiana
University Student Foundation's annual Little 50 race is
associated with the Little
500 season and occurs the week before the bicycle race. It
is a running relay race at Indiana
University's varsity track and field complex. Twenty-five
teams of four runners each compete for fifty

the teams' "pit"

Little 500 IU-EMS
Picnic
Location: Outside Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse South
Side
Description: IU-EMS hosts a free picnic before the
men's Little 500 race for all members, even if they
are not working at the race. Hamburgers, hot dogs, chips,
cookies, soda, and water are typically
available. Members may bring food to contribute, but it is
not necessary. Members do not have to
follow the uniform policy to attend the picnic. For

Description: Taste of
Bloomington is a community tradition that brings together more
than 40 local
food and beverage vendors during the summer to offer product
samples to the public during the 8-hour
event. Activities include live music, children's
activities, and an art fair that is coupled with the event.

IU-EMS' Role: IU-EMS will
be stationed at the Information and First Aid Tent near the
entrance to
Showers Common, but will also periodically roam through the
event area. We will watch for any
