Prayers
IU-EMS does not discriminate on any basis, including
spiritual beliefs, nor does it endorse any particular set of
beliefs. While the following prayers are articulated in
the language of Abrahamic belief systems (Judaism, Christianity,
and Islam), they encompass the more general spirit of helping
fellow humans which is the cornerstone of emergency medicine,
and can be adapted to anyone's spiritual or moral preferences.
They are provided here only as a voluntary supplement for
members' personal interests. View IU-EMS'
constitution

Oh God, You know what lies ahead of me today:
the calls I will be asked to respond to
and those who find themselves in situations
they never imagined, and see no way out of.
For them, I humbly ask that You would speed me on
with attending angels at my side,
guiding me in every decision and procedure.
To all who plead and those who cannot,
I pray to be a Good Samaritan
as they look to me for help and rescue.
Help me to save as many as I can,
and should mine be the last face they see,
I pray that they will have looked into eyes
that reflected Your love for them.
As I perform my duties, Oh God,
whatever be the call,
help to guide me and keep me safe
from danger large and small.
I want to serve and do my best,
no matter what the scene.
I pledge to keep my skills refined
and my judgment quick and keen.
The calling to give of myself,
most do not understand.
But I stand ready all the time
to help my fellow man.
To have the chance to help a child,
restore their laugh with glee.
A word of thanks I may not hear,
but knowing is enough for me.
The praise of men is fine for some,
but I feel truly blessed
that You, Oh God, have chosen me
to serve in EMS.
Oh God, grant me the ability
to give emergency care
with skillful hands, knowledgeable mind,
and tender love and care.
Help me deal with everything
when lives are on the line,
to see the worst, administer aid,
and ease a worried mind.
So help me as I go today
to accept what fate may be.
Touch these hands, use this mind,
help this EMT.
Oh my God, teach me to receive the ill and
injured in Your name.
Give to my efforts success for the glory of Your
holy name.
It is Your work; without You, I cannot succeed.
Grant that the ill and injured whom You have
placed in my care may be abundantly blessed,
and not one of them be lost because of any
neglect on my part.
Help me to overcome every temporal weakness
and strengthen in me whatever may enable me to
bring joy to the lives of those I serve.
Give me grace for the sake of Your ill and
injured ones
and of those lives that will be influenced by
them.
