Uniform Policy


   All members working at events for which IU-EMS provides coverage must adhere to the following uniform policy, which will be strictly enforced.  Select one of the following topics to learn more:

 Uniform Components


  • Official Maroon IU-EMS Uniform Shirt

    • Provided at all Events

    • Position (EMT or First Aider) Indicated on Right Chest

  • Official IU-EMS ID Tag

    • If You do not Have Your Own, Generic ID Tags are Available

  • Plain White Short- or Long-Sleeved Undershirt

  • Plain Black Pants

    • EMT/BDU Pants Strongly Preferred

      • May be Purchased for $20-$30 at:

    • Conservative Slacks Acceptable

  • Plain Black Belt with Small Buckle

  • Plain Black Socks

  • Plain Black Footwear

    • Tactical/Work Boots Strongly Preferred

    • Conservative Shoes Acceptable

     

    Generic First Aider & EMT Tags   

 Optional Apparel


  • Conservative jackets and coats which match the uniform may be worn during     inclement weather.

  • Conservative winter hats which match the uniform may be worn during                 inclement weather.

  • IU-EMS jackets and winter hats are strongly preferred for members who own them,        or if they are available at an event.

  • Only official IU-EMS baseball caps may be worn while in uniform.

  • Only official IU-EMS sweatshirts and fleeces may be worn while in uniform.

  • All optional apparel must be free of large logos and designs.

 Accessories


  • Men are allowed to wear one conservative stud earring in each ear, and women three in each ear.

    • Dangling earrings are strictly prohibited for your safety and that of our patients.

  • No other piercing may be worn while in uniform.

    • If you have a recent piercing which can not be removed, please consult the IU-EMS president prior to your first event that you will work with the piercing in person or by e-mail.

  • One conservative necklace may be worn inside the uniform shirt.

  • For patient treatment reasons, It is highly recommended that all members wear a digital watch while working at events for which IU-EMS provides medical coverage.

  • Although highly discouraged for patient treatment reasons, one small, conservative ring is allowed on each hand.

  • Although highly discouraged for patient treatment reasons, one tight-fitting, conservative bracelet on one arm is allowed.

  • Sunglasses must be conservative in color, style, and frame size, not extending beyond the eyebrow       or cheekbone.

 Grooming


  • A neat, clean, and healthy appearance is essential.

  • Hair must be neat and orderly, and pulled back into a ponytail if able to fall into eyes or face.

  • Men must be cleanly shaven, or, if they have a beard and/or moustache, must be neatly trimmed.

  • Although highly discouraged for patient treatment and professionalism reasons, light cologne or  perfume may be worn in small amounts.

 Additional Information


  • All clothing must be completely clean and unwrinkled.

  • Shirts must be neatly tucked in at all times.

  • Collars must be worn down at all times.

  • The uniform policy must be followed at all times while wearing the uniform, including event preparation, breaks, and while en route to or from events.

  • Uniforms must only be worn while working at approved IU-EMS events, and directly en route to and from such events.

  • It is strictly prohibited to wear any part of the IU-EMS uniform in bars, clubs, liquor stores, parties, or any other unprofessional locations, including any location where alcohol or drugs are being used.

  • It is strictly prohibited to use any part of the IU-EMS uniform for any other unprofessional purpose, which will be determined at the discretion of the executive board.

  • If you would like an exception to any part of the uniform policy for a religious or medical reason, please consult the IU-EMS president in person or by e-mail.
