covinskygrandrounds Kenneth Covinsky, MD, MPH, presented “What can functional status tell us about the older patient?” at Medicine Grand Rounds on August 15, 2007. Dr. Covinsky is Professor of Medicine and the Edmund G. Brown, Sr. Endowed Chair in Geriatrics in the Division of Geriatrics at the University of California, San Francisco. He is also a staff physician at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Youcef Sennour, MD is the recipient of a Department of Medicine Teaching Award for the 2005 – 2006 academic year. The award is presented in the form of an educational bonus and is based on criteria that include the quantity and the quality of teaching as judged by fellows, residents and medical students who participate in the department’s feedback system that evaluates clinical teaching activities. Dr. Sennour’s learners placed a high value on his teaching, thus earning him a spot in the top 20% of teachers.
Dr. Sennour is a geriatrician, an assistant professor of clinical medicine, medical director of the Acute Care for Elders (ACE) Consult Service at Methodist Hospital, and associate director of the IU Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program.

Michael Sha, MD, is the recipient of a 2007 Trustee Teaching Award from Indiana University. Dr. Sha is one of 37 IU School of Medicine recipients who were selected by a review committee which used the criterion of excellence in teaching, including the review of student and/or course evaluations.  Recipients of this prestigious “best teacher” award receive a stipend, have their names displayed on a plaque, and are recognized at award ceremonies at IUSM, IUPUI, and the medical school commencement in May. Dr. Sha is assistant professor of clinical medicine and a geriatrician at the Roudebush VA Medical Center where he precepts medical students, internal medicine residents, and geriatric medicine fellows. He is also a member of the IU Geriatrics Fellowship Executive Committee.

Congratulations to Dr. Sha, who is the new Governor Elect Designee of the of Indiana chapter of the American College of Physicians. Dr. Sha will start his 4year term in the Spring of 2008. He has served as a member of the chapter’s Governing Council for almost 10 years, working on major issues confronting the profession and the Chapter, and has taken a leadership role in the development of Indiana ACP Services and in solidifying the financial footing of the Chapter.

Dr. Counsell, gave an invited presentation at the 15th Annual Medicaid Managed Care Congress held in Baltimore, MD, June 14 - 15, 2007. He spoke on the "Effectiveness of the Geriatric Resources for Assessment and Care of Elders (GRACE) Model of Primary Care for Dual Eligible Seniors" as a part of the half day symposium on Dual Eligible and Special Needs Plans: Integration & Coordination of Medicaid & Medicare.

PREVENT Honored by Johns Hopkins Medicine for Excellence in Dementia Care
On behalf of the PREVENT Study Team, Chris Callahan, MD, accepted the Johns Hopkins Medicine 6th Annual Award for Excellence in Dementia Care on March 24, 2007, at the school’s 13th Annual Update on the Treatment of Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders: Defining the Standard of Care, held in Baltimore.
The award honored the JAMA publication, “Effectiveness of Collaborative Care for Older Adults with Alzheimer Disease in Primary Care: A Randomized Controlled Trial,” which described the outcomes of the PREVENT clinical trial which was conducted in local primary care settings.

Dr. Callahan presented the award lecture, “Delivering Effective Dementia Care in the Primary Care Setting,” which reviewed the challenges and opportunities to improve the quality of care provided to older adults with Alzheimer's disease in the primary care setting. He also described recent results of system-level interventions, including the PREVENT trial.

PREVENT stands for Providing Resources Early for Vulnerable Elders Needing Treatment (for Memory Loss).
