In Your Voice
Many alumni contact the IUHPFL with stories and memories of their unique and life-changing experience abroad. In the coming months we will attempt to collect their voices. Some can be found below.
“I was a participant in the program in St. Brieuc in 1963 and wanted to let you know it was one of the most important experiences in my life. As an adult I have taught in Austria, Mexico, and Venezuela which I directly attribute to my IU experience. I have also been a researcher at Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth investigating academic excellence and the role of culture in fostering it. I know that in a job like yours you always hope to have an impact, but it is unclear what ripple effects are produced. I just wanted to let you know that my experience in your program was one of the seminal events in my life." —Wayne D. Parker, Ph.D., 1963 St. Brieuc, France
"I feel that it not only changed where I was in the world that summer, it changed my whole world for the rest of my life. It has colored and flavored my entire existence. This transformation has been outwardly manifested such as by my vet school externship at Bayer in Wuppertal-Elberfeld, Germany and my being sent as part of my professional development to England and inwardly manifested by multicultural perspective through which I view the world. Thank you and the entire program for providing the opportunity to me and to all those who went before, with and after me." —Michael A. Schnell, DVM, MBA, 1982 Krefeld, Germany
"My time in San Luis Potosí was a window into a vibrant, welcoming new culture; it was the kind of experience that stayed with me long after I returned to Indiana. When I began writing a novel, my mind turned again to the colorful streets of Guanajuato, a city we visited, and I went back to do research more than a decade later. The trouble my characters find in Trip Through Your Wires is purely fictional, born of an imagination lucky enough to experience cultural difference, Spanish language immersion, and new friendships in a life-changing study abroad program." —Sarah Layden, 1992 San Luis Potosí, Mexico
“I would also like the take the time to express how much I enjoyed the program. I had an amazing summer in Oviedo, with fantastic professors and fellow students, and came back with more confidence and independence than I could have imagined. I can't think of a better way that I could have spent seven weeks of my summer, other than in a very awarding immersion program with great people from Indiana. Thanks so much for creating such a great program, and for giving me the opportunity to participate in it!”—Lucy Lundergan, 2011 Oviedo, Spain
