Communication with the IUHPFL Office

Communication #4: November 18th, 2011

Greetings from the IUHPFL Office!

At this point, IUHPFL Coordinators should have received an e-mail with an attachment of the results of the Fall 2011 language exam. When you open the attachment, you will see next to each students’ name will be either YES (meaning your student passed), NO (meaning your student did not pass), NOT TESTED (which indicates a student registered online but did not show up to take the test), or INVALID (which indicates the student has not paid the test fee and scores will be held until payment is received).

For those of your students who passed the exam, be sure to congratulate them!  The IUHPFL language exam is a college placement test, thus just passing it is quite a feat. Please console those students who did not pass with the knowledge that over 600 students took the language exam this fall!

Your students and their guardians will be receiving an e-mail from us – please see below – with the information in bullets. Please pay special attention to the newly announced Krefeld reduction in fees award as well as five new scholarships that will be awarded to Krefeld students, courtesy of Indiana University Bloomington (IUB) Germanic Studies with funding from the Max Kade Foundation (this is a big deal, German teachers!) as well as other scholarships and grants that are available to prospective IUHPFL participants.

  • The Krefeld Program offers five $1,000 scholarships provided by the IUB Germanic Studies, funded by the Max Kade Foundation. No application is necessary as winners are selected from the applicant pool.
  • All Krefeld students receive a $500 reduction in fee award toward their Program fees. No application is necessary.
  • The Self-Inventory on our website assists you in finding out if the IUHPFL is the right study abroad program for you.
  • If you ‘pass’ the self-inventory, we encourage you and your guardians to read up on the 'IUHPFL Need to Knows.'
  • Read what our alumni have to say about their experiences with the Honors Program.
  • To see a general overview of the application and acceptance processes, find out about spring Orientations (if invited to participate in the Program, you and one guardian must attend your Program’s Orientation) and departure dates for each Program, click here.
  • See our Program Fees tab on our website about how to apply for Financial Aid, other scholarship and grant opportunities available and ideas on how to fundraise to pay for Program Fees, in the event you are selected to participate.
  • The 2011-2012 IUHPFL application materials are now accessible online as well as the Financial Aid Application.  The Personal Application will be submitted online and will be due December 19, 2011.  The Financial Aid Application, which can be submitted electronically or by e-mail, will be due January 3, 2012.   As you can see, this year the entire application (personal application, appraisals, official transcript and copy of the student’s passport) is online. If you happen to be a student’s current foreign language teacher, the student will enter your information into his/her personal application as the contact for the foreign language (Part B) teacher appraiser. When the student submits his/her application, an e-mail will be generated to you directly to the e-mail address your student provides. This e-mail will contain a link for you to navigate to the foreign language (Part B) teacher appraisal to fill out for that specific student. You will receive an e-mail for each of your students applying for the IUHPFL. Please be checking your junk mail should the e-mail go there instead of your inbox.    As we mentioned to students, e-mails will not be generated to their appraisers until their application is submitted. We have asked them to be fair to their appraisers and give them plenty of time to fill out the appraisals, but we encourage you to remind your students to do so as well.  Please share this information with other teachers at your school who may likely be Part A or Part B appraisers, so that they know what information is being communicated to students who passed the test.

Thank you once again for promoting the IUHPFL within your school.  Please share this information with other teachers whose students took the language exam, so that they know what information is being communicated to their students.

Also, please note that the dates for the Krefeld Program have been determined: June 11-July 26 and have been added to our website here.

Do not hesitate to call or e-mail us with any questions.

Sincerely,

Stephanie
