Oviedo, Spain

The fourth Honors Program in Spain started in 2007 in the city of Oviedo. Oviedo, surrounded by green and hilly landscapes is capital of the Principality of Asturias. This beautiful city is forty minutes south of the picturesque beaches of the Cantabrian Sea, and within easy reach of the Cantabrian Mountains and the impressive national park of Los Picos de Europa.

Oviedo, a city of 212,000 inhabitants, was founded as a monastery in 761. Thirty years later it became the seat of the kings of Asturias and remained so for over a century, when the royal court moved to León. Oviedo can boast of the earliest pre-Romanesque churches in Spain and its beautiful Gothic cathedral was built in the fourteenth century. Its streets are lined with elegant buildings from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It offers many shops and well designed and restful parks.
