SCHOOLS: Overview to the IUHPFL

Since the Indiana University Honors Program in Foreign Language's (IUHPFL) inception in 1962, it has offered Indiana high school students not only an intense immersion experience in their foreign language and culture, but also the opportunity to experience life in another country and gain confidence, strength of character and a greater sense of self.

If your school has been a long-time supporter of the IUHPFL, we encourage you to participate in yet another Honors Program Cycle.  If your school has no experience with the Honors Program, we invite you to join the IUHPFL family, provided you meet the IUHPFL's qualifications for program participation.

It is our hope that the Honors Program will interest dedicated and motivated students at your school.  In an effort to attract the right kind of students to the IUHPFL, we wish for both you and former Program participants (alumni) to emphasize the following when promoting the Honors Program:

  • The three aspects of the Honors Program that make it different from other summer study abroad programs:

  • The fact that the Honors Program experience is one that is demanding on all levels:

    • academic (i.e., class load and daily assignments)
    • personal (i.e., overcoming fears, managing stress and anxiety)
    • physical (i.e., jetlag, adjusting to a new schedule)
    • social (i.e., interacting with a host family, students from the group)
    • emotional (i.e., the absence of the comforts of U.S. family and home)

  • Maintaining the ‘Honor’ in ‘Honors Program,’ by emphasizing that the IUHPFL student not only holds himself/herself accountable for upholding the Honor Code, but holds his/her peers accountable for doing so as well.

We strongly encourage you to thoroughly browse our website to get a better understanding of the goals and objectives of the Honors Program.  The IUHPFL has undergone many transformations since the Fall of 2008 and we’d like you to be in tune with the Program’s updates and changes.
