Students who are eligible for the IUHPFL and interested in applying must first take the language test. Below you will find the answers to your questions regarding the language test.
What is the language test?
The language test assesses the potential Honors Program student's grammar, reading, and listening comprehension skills. Also as part of the test, students will be asked to formulate an authentic writing sample on a given topic. The test will take roughly an hour and forty-five minutes to two hours to complete.
Your scores on the language test will determine whether or not you are invited to apply to the IUHPFL. Results of the language test will be communicated to the IUHPFL Coordinator at your school in early November, who will then communicate to you whether or not you are invited to apply to the IUHPFL.
Please note that if you took the language test for last year’s Program cycle, but chose not to continue to apply to the IUHPFL last Program cycle, that your scores are not valid for the current year's Program cycle. If you wish to apply to the IUHPFL for the current Program cycle, you must take the test again.
When and where does the language test take place?
The language test is held at several regional sites in Indiana, typically on IU campuses or high schools in the area, on Saturdays in October. A make-up test is offered on the following Mondays for those who absolutely cannot test on Saturday.
All students will be required to show a photo ID when they check in for the test. Examples of a valid photo ID include a state-issued driver’s license, a state-issued ID card, a school ID, or a passport.
Before registering for the language test, we encourage potential participants to do the following:
- Read the IUHPFL’s eligibility requirements to determine if you and your school are eligible to participate in the Honors Program
- Understand the IUHPFL’s Honor Code, a code of conduct that all IUHPFL participants are expected to maintain
- Begin the process to apply for a passport, as a passport number and passport copies will be required materials upon applying for the IUHPFL
