Mission Statement

The Institute of Hungarian Studies at Indiana University has two interrelated missions that complement the Hungarian Studies program at Indiana University.

Brief History of the Institute

The Institute of Hungarian Studies was established in 1991 to disseminate knowledge about Hungarian society and civilization; to support organizations and projects related to Hungarian Studies at Indiana University; and to house the Institute's impressive library collection of Hungarica.

The first director of the Institute, Professor Gustav Bayerle, was responsible for supervising the library, maintaining the IHS website, and supervising various activities sponsored by the Institute. Professor Bayerle held this position until his retirement in 1999. The year 2000 brought significant changes to the Institute. Owing to the inconvenient location of the IHS library, the leadership decided that the library collection would better serve the IU community if it were integrated into the Main library. This decision also served as an impetus to redefine the mission of the Institute.

In Spring 2000 IU business professor Paul Marer took over as director of the Institute of Hungarian Studies. With the help of several other professors, Marer drafted a new mission statement (printed above) and initiated a number of projects to be sponsored by the Institute.
