Students may select from relevant degree programs that span a range of disciplines and areas of specialization.  For more details, visit the degree program website and/or consult with the program academic advisor.  (This section will soon be expanded to include all environmental and sustainability program majors, minors, and certificates.)

BS in Environmental Science

  • Prepares students for graduate studies or careers as scientists in environmental science or in one of the traditional physical sciences (e.g., biology, chemistry, geology, mathematics, meteorology, physics)
  • A selected concentration area provides each student with a specific field of expertise
  • Field experience and independent research
  • Jointly administered through the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the IU College of Arts & Sciences

BS in Public Affairs:  Environmental Management

  • Prepares students for careers in government, the nonprofit sector, and private industry
  • Teaches environmental law and regulation, real-world application of scientific theory, and the science and policy behind sustainable practices
  • Examines applied aspects of environmental policy
  • Administered through the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs

BS in Outdoor Recreation, Parks, and Human Ecology

  • Focuses on basic concepts of outdoor resources, the relationships and interactions of people and outdoor resources, and how to manage them
  • Topics include outdoor recreation, environmental education, interpretive techniques, outdoor adventure education, nature study, recreation resource management, human health and natural environments and organized camping
  • Prepares students for careers in an array of settings–including municipal parks and recreation departments, nature preserves, nonprofit organizations, outdoor adventure organizations, and state and federal agencies (e.g., US Forest Service and National Park Service)
  • Administered through the IU School of Public Health

MPA in Energy

  • Focuses on energy generation, use, and impact–exploring the socioeconomic and environmental conequences of energy policies and technologies
  • Prepares students for opportunities with organizations in both the public and private sectors–including energy companies, policy organizations, and regulatory agencies
  • Administered through the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs

MPA in Environmental Policy and Natural Resource Management

  • Integrates skill-based courses in public policy, management, and environmental affairs with training in the environmental sciences
  • Includes coursework in data analysis and modeling, environmental economics and policy, environmental resource management and policy, and environmental law
  • Ranked 1st in the nation by US News and World Report in 2012
  • Prepares students for management positions in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors in local and state agencies, federal government, corporations, consulting firms, international and intergovernmental organizations, and non-governmental and community-based organizations

  • Prepares students to work for governments, private businesses, and special interest organizations that seek to sustain and improve both current and future conditions for life on earth

MPH in Environmental Health

  • Teaches technical skills for the development, implementation, and evaluation of practices that seek to identify, prevent, or minimize the adverse impact of environmental and occupational hazards on human health
  • Focuses on assessment and control of environmental and occupational exposures, the effects of these exposures on human health, principles of toxicology, and toxic regulations and policies
  • Prepares students for careers that communicate environmental health risks to the public, analyze the impact of environmental assaults and exposures to susceptible populations, and manage environmental and occupational risks

MSR in Park and Public Land Management

  • Provides students with approaches to managing land-based operations at the national, state, regional and local levels
  • Emphasizes the stewardship of lands entrusted to many public agencies and private enterprises in order to improve the environment, sustain public enjoyment of parks and facilities by employing contemporary management practices, and balancing resource protection with recreation and use of lands

PhD in Environmental Health

  • Educates environmental health professionals to understand the influences and effects of environmental factors on human health and disease with a focus on rural communities
  • Prepares health scientists to conduct and share through scholarly pursuits the results of original lab-based research
