Ficklin received his BS from IU Bloomington; his MS from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale; and his PhD from University of California, Davis.  His research focuses on the integrated modeling of climate variability and change, the hydrological cycle in agricultural and mountainous settings, water resources systems, and aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Ficklin assesses the effects of climate change on water quantity and quality (stream temperature, dissolved oxygen, and sediment concentration) in the mountainous western United States using hydrologic and water quality models driven by climate change projections. The results from his assessments allow water resource managers, watershed planners, and ecologists to make informed, sustainable management decisions.

Akhter's research interests lie in water law and policy, the political ecology of development, agrarian political economy, Marxist geography and geopolitics, and modern Pakistan and South Asia.  He received his BS in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, his MS in Economics from Lahore University of Management Sciences, and a his PhD in Geography from the University of Arizona.  Akhter will join the department in July.
