The Beng-English Dictionary is the first dictionary of this Southern Mande language of Côte d'Ivoire, which is also known as Gã or Ngen. With over 2,000 headwords plus many more idiomatic phrases, this dictionary provides cultural information as well as linguistic information on pronunciation, dialect, grammatical category, meaning and etymology. This work is of interest not only to Mande specialists but also to African language specialists in general because of the intriguing nature of the Beng language, which is geographically isolated from the other Southern Mande languages and is influenced by the neighboring Akan and Northern Mande languages. The dictionary includes an introduction to the sociolinguitsic status of Beng, a section on its phonology and grammar, and English-Beng index, and an index of Beng diseases and treatments.
