Cliticization and Type-Lifting: A Unified Account of Mandarin NP De

By Chu-Ren Huang

This work proposes a uniform account of Mandarin Chinese NP de relying on the interaction of different modules. First, a typology of the different morphemes sharing the phonological form /de/ is provided in anticipation of a thorough study of the NP clitic DEnp, which marks the head of a complex NP. Second, DEnp is accounted for in a separate module of cliticization, its distribution being captured with a general schema [np XP DEnp NP]. Last, corresponding to this schema, a formal account in ILo is also given of the semantics of the DEnp construction, with DEnp translated as the meet operator and the Fregean nominalization device structurally encoded to lift types.
