This monograph newly analyzes the genesis and evolution of Romance periphrastic verb forms, focusing on the typological forces that shaped the major variant systems of auxiliation and past participle agreement. La Fauci draws on resources rarely combined in one work: formal relational grammar together with ample material from studies on Late Latin. The diachronic process that first created Romance periphrastics is formalized with unmatched clarity. The synchronic discussion concentrates first on standard Italian, where participle agreement presents previously unsolved problems, and then seeks to parametrize the morphosyntactic systems of several modern Romance varieties while also interpreting the differences typologically.
