A Crosslinguistic Data Sample in Support of a Principle of Linearization

By Dan Maxwell

This work, originally an appendix to Maxwell's 1979 Ph.D. dissertation, has now been revised as an independent presentation of data from fifty languages of the world in support of a principle of linearization. Information concerning Nominal Case Markings is presented for each language in a variety of constructions (basic unitransitive and bitransitive sentences, DO preposing, WH-questions for the DO, and genitival constructions). An example of descriptive linguistics at its best, this work will appeal especially to syntacticians and typologists.
