This paper provides a general introduction to the linguistic side of machine translation with particular attention to DLT, one of the major products now being developed. The use of slightly modified Esperanto, both as an intermediate language in the DLT system and as a means of coding the world knowledge used to resolve ambiguity language is discussed. In addition to a thorough discussion of the prototype translation system between English and French, completed in 1988, there are also briefer discussions of work relating to other languages, terminology, and techniques of deriving knowledge from texts.
