This paper represents an account of the generalizations concerning morphological causatives in Oromo within a systemic grammatical framework. Only a single (surface) level of syntactic constituent structure is assumed, and generalizations are made by referring to a hierarchy of semantic roles rather than to a level of grammatical relations. The suggested systemic framework is quite accessible formally, and the author demonstrates just how much can be done with semantic roles and without grammatical relations. Interesting and provocative, this paper is worthy of the attention of anyone concerned with the issues of the role of grammatical relations, the role of the lexicon, and the analysis of causative constructions.
