Directions to Bloomington, INDIANA

NOTE: Beware of time zone difference. Bloomington, Indiana is in Eastern Standard Time. Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio are in the same time zone as Bloomington. Illinois is in Central Time, and therefore 1 hour behind Bloomington.

Alternatives to these directions:   

1.  The searchable/clickable  IU web map isn't a bad alternative once you're in Bloomington.  (the Atwater Garage and Jordan Hall on the south side of campus).

If you are not coming from south (Kentucky), follow the numbered directions below. (If you are coming from Kentucky skip to the bottom of this page.)

1. Drive to Indianapolis (not the scenic route):
   1. From Ohio State: I-70 West until Indianapolis
   2. From Michigan: I-69 South until Indianapolis
   3. From Illinois: I-74 East until Indianapolis
   4. From the Chicago area:  I-65 South until Indianapolis
2. at Indianapolis:  I-465 South
3. I-465 until exit 4 Harding Street (also Indiana State Road 37 South, Bloomington, Martinsville).
4. Follow 37 South for about 50 miles
5. exit College Ave/Walnut Ave (the first Bloomington exit)
6. Follow the College Ave. exit (there's only one way to go, you'll be heading south) for several miles. You'll eventually start to see the numbered streets of Bloomington.  (If you are not going to the Atwater Garage to park for the conference, you are on your own here)
7. continue south to 3rd street.  Left/east on Third.  After a couple of blocks the road takes a sharp right and then a sharp left:  you are now on Atwater (a one-way heading east). 
8. Continue a couple of blocks until you see the Atwater parking structure on your left.  It's 5 stories tall (and the only one of its kind in the neighborhood).  You have to pass the parking garage and take a left on to Faculty Ave.  Be sure to park on the 4th or 5th floors (those not labeled "A permits") or you risk being ticketed and/or towed.

Jordan Hall from the Atwater Garage (pedestrian traffic):

1. Exit the parking lot from the entrance that you came in through (on Faculty Dr.).
2. Turn left and follow Faculty Dr. until it comes to a dead end at 3rd St.
   1. Jordan Hall is right in front of you. Cross 3rd St. and use the entrance straight ahead.  The Jordan Hall Lobby and the Room A100 are both on the ground-level floor.

Just in case, the linguistics department is on the 3rd floor of Memorial Hall which is the castle-like building east of Jordan Hall, immediately after a greenhouse. The departmental office is in room 322 and the office phone is (812) 855-6456.

If you are coming from south (Kentucky), follow A-D below.

1. Follow I-65 North until Columbus, Indiana.
2. Take State Road 46 West.
3. Follow 46 West for about 35 miles. When you see a sign for Junction 446, you're about 2 miles away from the IU campus.
4. Keep going straight. The road will turn into 3rd St and will eventually become a 2-lane one-way street, heading west.
   1. The Atwater Garage garage will be on your left between Faculty Dr. and S. Woodlawn Ave. Because of one-way streets, you'll need to turn left at the light on Woodlawn, left at the light on Atwater, and left on Faculty (after you have passed the 5-story Atwater Garage).  Be sure to park on the 4th or 5th floors (those not labeled "A permits") or you risk being ticketed and/or towed.
