MAPS Events: 2012-2013
Fall Call-Out Meeting: August 29th and September 2nd, 2012
MAPS held its annual Fall callout meetings in an effort to recruit new members. We introduced the group and its history and shared with the audience some our past events from the previous year and plans for this year. In order to maximize attendance, the callout was held twice: once on Wednesday and once on Sunday. Both times, the lecture hall was completely filled up. Here's to a great year!
MAPS Cookout Social: September 9th, 2012
MAPS held its
first social event on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon in the pinic area between Campus view apartments and Tulip Tree apartments. Burgers and hot dogs were grilled and enjoyed by several new and old members. This was a great first social of the year!
Research Symposium: September 15th, 2012
The research symposium entitled “Science Shaping Our Future” was hosted by the National Organization for the Professional advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) and the Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students (MAPS). Graduate and undergraduate students alike presented abstracts of their scientific research in various fields of study such as physics, biology, and chemistry. Students detailed their ambitions to further research in their fields as judges and curious spectators made rounds about the room. Lunch was highlighted by a keynote speaker, Dr. Sokol an highly established IU professor well known for his work in the world of the sciences. The judges tallied and discussed their votes,, naming two graduate and one undergraduate overall prize recipients. Our own Yuchen (Tony) Gao was titled best overall undergraduate! This was truly a great day of learning and fellowshipping with the leaders of tomorrow!
Tour for Diversity in Medicine: September 27th, 2012
The event was very successful for the people who came. They freely got to ask questions to all of the healthcare professionals about medicine and listen to their personal journeys. This event inspired a lot of minorities to pursue their goals in the medical field because they witnessed so many other people like them who have done it first hand. They also gave very helpful information about study skills, extracurricular activities, and how to improve oneself as a medical/dental school applicant.
