This study explores the challenges to the public school since the 1960's by groups who seek to win tax support for various forms of private education, chiefly in the form of vouchers that would allow parents to send their children to a wide array of private institutions. The goal is to describe the various proposals; to trace their political, social, and ideological roots; to appraise their relative strengths in the American political arena; and to make an informed judgment about the seriousness of this recent challenge to the central place of public education in American Life.
