The IU Police Academy's mission is to train the employees of the IU Police Department. In fulfilling this mission, the academy uses IU Police Department personnel who are state certified law enforcement instructors and experts from federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. The academy also provides instruction to other law enforcement agencies.
While in the Police Academy, recruits undergo 12 weeks of intensive training in criminal law, firearms, traffic law, ethics, diversity, physical tactics, and a variety of other topics.
Emergency Vehicle Operations CourseRecruits receive over 40 hours of training in the operation of vehicles under emergency circumstances from veteran EVOC instructors. This includes evasive manuevers, threshold braking and a pursuit course. |

S.T.O.P.S.Strategies and Tactics of Patrol Stops deals with the uncertainty of a vehicle stop and how to survive. Recruits learn what not to do during a low-risk, unknown risk, and a high-risk traffic stop. |
Firearms TrainingRecruits are given over 40 hours of training in the handling and use of firearms. Recruits must shoot a minimum qualifing score on both their handgun and the shotgun in order to pass this phase of training. Recruits must also pass a comprehensive written exam. |

Physical FitnessRecruits are required to pass a physical fitness test prior to entering the academy and then just prior to completion of the academy. The morning fitness routine helps get the recruits in shape. |
Physical TacticsRecruits receive over 40 hours in physical tactics. This includes ground fighting, restraining holds, handcuffing, baton, OC spray, weapon retention, pressure points, strikes, take downs, and falls. |

First Aid, CPR, AEDRecruits also receive training in first aid, CPR, and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator. |
Traffic Accident InvestigationRecruits receive classroom training and practical exercises in the proper ways to conduct a traffic accident investigation. The training is conducted by veteran Indiana State Troopers and experienced accident investigators. |
