Welcome to the Undergraduate Program at Indiana University-Bloomington. We are a nationally ranked political science department that offers great opportunities for studying politics both nationally and internationally, becoming involved in civic engagement, and preparing yourself for exciting jobs as well as graduate study in political science, law and other social science.

The Department of Political Science offers broad coverage of the study of politics. As a student of political science, you can explore many different dimensions of political life, ranging from small groups and citizens' organizations, to urban settings, individual nations, supranational organizations, and the international system. The Department offers the opportunity to learn about politics in a variety of ways, from basic information about government and political processes, to broad issues of power, conflict, peace, citizenship, representation and justice.

The political Science Major

The undergraduate major in Political Science provides you with the skills and knowledge to understand the theory and practice of government and politics, both here in the US and internationally.

Through our courses, you will learn about political institutions and processes and develop the capacity to think critically about political controversies, public policies, and their outcomes.

The major will teach you how to evaluate individual, group, and mass behavior in political settings.

Interdepartmental Majors

Students can also pursue interdepartmental majors in Political Science and Economics, and in Political Science and Philosophy.

We are also home to LESA-Leadership, Ethics and Social Action, which is an undergraduate concentration. The program in Leadership, Ethics, and Social Action (LESA), housed in the Political Science department through the College of Arts and Sciences, offers an academic minor to interested students. Three service-based courses plus an ethics and a social organizations requirement culminate in a capstone project. The capstone draws on a student's major academic interests to inform a service project that meets a community need. See the website at http://www.indiana.edu/~lesa or contact the advisor at lesa@indiana.edu. Advising appointments can be made by calling (812) 855-6308.

Our undergraduate majors have opportunities to learn first-hand about politics through internships, through study abroad and through in-depth research on honors projects and on faculty research projects.

Internships, Study Abroad and Honors

There are also opportunities to get involved in more local political and social action through service-learning projects, through the LESA, and through various student organizations affiliated with political science.
