About Us

RAW Officers:

Mission Statement:

RAW has two main priorities:

Our first priority is simple: to adore animals and encourage others to do so!

RAW aims to promote healthy, happy lives for all animals (including humans!) in Bloomington and beyond. Of course, we want to stop cruelty and torture whenever and wherever we see it! One of our major goals is to work with IU students and the Bloomington community in developing achievable methods of making a difference in the lives of animals. By advocating for public policies and laws that protect animal well-being, we believe we can honor the profound connections humans have always shared with animals. RAW is an inclusive organization, not an exclusive one; we welcome all students and faculty who are interested in serving as advocates for animals, no matter what their lifestyle or experience. To that end, we plan and sponsor events that enable all animal lovers to enact and celebrate positive changes.

Our second priority is to reshape outdated approaches to animal advocacy.

At RAW, we want to give "activism" - as an approach to change and as a means of education - an entirely new, entirely sexy make-over. Too often, animal rights groups resort to retrograde methods of dissent like picketing or staining fur coats with red paint. Because of their implicit violence, these tactics are, quite frankly, passe and very unappealing - and hence alienate a lot of animal lovers who might otherwise participate in organized movements for animal well-being. Believe us, we are quite serious about stopping animal torture and will be utterly outspoken about our intense opposition to animal fighting, puppy mills, the fur trade, factory farming, and inhumane sport hunting. But we want to find innovative ways to make these senseless activities disappear. It is NOT HOT to hurt animals. Compassion RAWks!

Here's a link to our constitution.

Meet the RAW Family:

Kathryn is a junior at Indiana University studying Exercise Science with plans to go on to physical therapy school. She grew up in Granger, Indiana, where her home was always filled with pets; she has had dogs, a cat, a rabbit, a chinchilla and hamsters. She has no pets in Bloomington, but misses her adorable collie-shepherd, Honey terribly.

Aside from animals, Kathryn also loves dancing, running and working with kids. As RAW co-president, she hopes to make a bigger impact in the local community for animals, as well as continue to educate and be educated on important issues facing animals on all levels. She firmly believes we have a responsibility to help all of those who can’t help themselves, and hopes RAW can continue to do just that.

Beth is a sophomore at Indiana University in the process of doing an Individualized Major in zoology. Her main interest is herpetology and she has kept reptiles all of her life. Her current animal family includes a cat, two leopard geckos, an oscillated skink, a tiger salamander, a uromastyx, a corn snake, two long tailed lizards, and two finches. Her extended family remains back home in Indianapolis. They consist of two dogs, two rats, another cat, fish, two turtles, and a green iguana.

Beth worked for three years in a veterinary hospital in Indy, as well as a pet store (which sold supplies, not pets!). She currently volunteers and researches in the zooarchaeology lab and has done field research on Sagebrush lizards. This past summer she volunteered on the Limpopo Nature Reserve in Botswana. As RAW co-president, she hopes to increase animal education and awareness in the student population and Bloomington community, as well as provide fun activities that assist local animal organizations for any who are interested. She is looking forward to this year and thinks that RAW members can make a huge difference as animal advocates.

Laura is a sophomore at Indiana University and is currently working on a double major in biology and anthropology. She hopes to attend graduate school for zoology in the future. Her animal family currently includes four dogs, two leopard geckos, one cat, one corn snake, and three mice. While most of her pets remain at her home in Indianapolis, she is able to take some comfort in watching her mice run on their wheel all night. This, however, does not quite make up for the fact that she misses her other pets dearly.

In her spare time, Laura enjoys taking naps, watching Peyton Manning and the Colts, and hanging out with her friends. She is planning on going on a conservation volunteer trip to Peru in the summer of 2011, and hopes to gain a lot of experience working in the field. As the RAW vice president she hopes to raise awareness for animal rights in the community and around the nation. She thinks that people have a responsibility to take care of those who can’t speak for themselves, and knows that the members of RAW will make a great impact on many lives, both animal and human.

Kristen is a sophomore at Indiana University majoring in Marketing. She is from St. John, Indiana. Although Kristen doesn’t have any pets in Bloomington, she has a dog at home. Her dog is a yellow Labrador retriever named Rascal. Aside from RAW, Kristen likes to volunteer and spend time with friends.

As treasurer of RAW, Kristen hopes to educate and be educated on many issues involving animals. She believes that it is important to raise awareness about animal issues at IU and within the Bloomington community. She believes that helping animals and spreading the word about issues surrounding animals is fun. With this belief, she hopes to make the year a fun and helpful.

Joey is from "Indianapolis, IN", "Columbus, OH", or "New Milford, CT", whichever you prefer. Joey cares for the adorable but antisocial cat Benny, and misses his family dog Indiana (yes, his name is a reference to the movie). Joey is currently a Ph.D student in computer science and is happy to continue havng the opportunity to apply his skills to an altrusitic endeavor. Before coming to grad school, Joey worked for a company called eSchool Consultants, which provides services to public schools. Joey's hobbies apart from his profesional interests include skiing, cooking, running (as a defense against the prior interest), and altering electronics.

Alyce Miller Alyce Miller is a professor of English and teaches in the graduate creative writing program at Indiana University. Norton, 1995; and a novel, Stopping for Green Lights, Anchor Doubleday, 1999; and more than 150 short stories, poems, and essays published in literary magazines and anthologies. She leads a double life as a pro bono attorney with a special interest in animal rights law, and is a member of the Animal Legal Defense Fund. She has written and presented on such topics as the plight of wild animals in captivity, parallels between the children's and animal rights movements, the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, pet trusts, and voice, injury, and third party standing; etc. In addition to teaching literature and creative writing, she has recently taught special topics classes such as Animals and Ethics, and the Legal And Literary Animal. She is currently at work on a manuscript of poems about animals, as well as a series of essays examining the complex relationships between human and nonhuman animals. She is an International Associate of the New Zealand Centre for Human-Animal Studies and serves on the editorial boards of Journal of the Institute of Critical Animal Studies, and Animals and Society: Journal of Human-Animal Studies.
