Upcoming Events and Ongoing Projects

We're convinced that RAW energy and imagination can accomplish great things for animals! We've brainstormed the projects listed below to put the fun back in FUNdraising and make activism truly ACTIVE. Some of these ideas have been put into action (but we're always looking for ways to make them more fabulous and effective!), while others are visions just waiting to be realized. Let us know if you'd like to spearhead or volunteer for any of these projects. Also, feel free to send any creative proposals for events or projects our way. All activities must be approved by the RAW officers - but we are very open-minded and eager to embrace new ideas. ED= Estimated Date the event will take place.

"Sealed with a Kiss" Kissing Marathon:

Ever wish you could kiss your way into a kinder world? Well, now you can! Our annual "Sealed with A Kiss" kissing marathon will combine all of the passion of Valentine's Day with an intense desire to protect baby harp seals. In this event, lip-locked couples - of all sexual orientations - can demonstrate their sensual endurance while raising awareness and money for the plight of the 350,000 baby whitecoats who are killed every year in Canada for their fur. To read more about this cruel and unusual slaughter, please visit the Humane Society's Protect Seals website. We especially encourage fraternities and sororities to sign up for this super hot event, as it promises to be the sexiest, naughtiest competition you'll ever participate in. Even if you don't have a kissing partner lined up, there are still plenty of racy ways to get involved! For more info about how to kiss for a cause, please contact Deborah or Courtney. ED: February 2009

Please help us raise money for animals in Bloomington and beyond by joining us on campus as we bathe local dogs for a small donation. Contact Deborah or Courtney for more info. ED: September 2008

Furry Finals Fix

Raw-paw-looza Pet Pageant

Does your dog vie with Beyonce for super-diva status? Is your kitty-cat ready to be the newest member of the PussyCat Dolls? Would your bunny be right at home with Heff at the Playboy mansion? Could your gecko echo the Geico gecko? Then THIS pet pageant is for you and your fabulous pet. Bring your furry or feathered fashionista to compete for all kinds of hilarious titles and prizes, including "Best Pet and Guardian Lookalike," "Stellar Stomp", "Miss Manners", "Macho Macho Mutt", and "Fiercest Fur". Lest you think we're overcome with vanity a la Paris Hilton, our first-ever pet pageant will raise awareness and money for an extremely worthy cause: the spay and neuter efforts of local organizations. We need organizers to plan, solicit prizes, choose judges, establish rules and more! ED: October '08. Contact Deborah or Courtney.

Project Cat-Snip

Ever wanted to be a feral cat detective? You and a partner can work with Feral Cat Friends Inc. in order to "TNR" (Trap, Neuter, and Return) feral cats in Bloomington neighborhoods. This is an awesome chance to work with animals and local residents to improve all of our lives! The RAWsome staff members at Feral Cat Friends describe the volunteer experience this way: "When you volunteer to help us with Trap-Neuter-Return you will work with a team of trappers and the colony caregiver (usually a homeowner) to set traps, transport the trapped cats to surgery, then return the neutered and ear tipped cats back to their original location." Our goal is to recruit 10 teams (two people per team) of devoted volunteers, especially those interested in biology, veterinary medicine, social work, and public health, to commit to this long-term and rewarding project. For more information, contact Kara.

"Raw-Paw" Program

This program will develop a "RAW-paw" award for the many kick-ass companies who treat animals ethically in their business practices - giving local businesses a smokin'-hot logo to flaunt proudly in their shop-windows. We will also appeal to the better nature of those businesses that just need a little incentive to make the small changes that would translate to huge improvements in the lives of animals. Here is your chance to discuss and implement guidelines for how businesses can qualify for the RAW-paw award, to get creative by designing the RAW-paw logo, and to forge lasting relationships with local merchants to show Bloomington how fun and economically advantageous it can be to do the right thing. Contact Courtney.
