Slavic
Department Undergraduate Scholarship Opportunities
Daniel Armstrong Memorial Research Essay Award
This
Memorial Research Essay competition is dedicated to the memory of
IU Slavic department alumnus, teacher, scholar, and administrator, Professor
Daniel Armstrong (1942-1979). One award is presented to an undergraduate
student for a paper written for a class in Slavic studies taken during
the previous academic year. Follow the link above for full contest details.
Social Science Research Council Scholarships
The
IU Summer Workshop in Slavic, East European, and Central Asian Languages
(SWSEEL) offers instruction in advanced Russian and first- and second-year
Georgian with Social Science Research Council (SSRC) scholarships available
to undergraduate students. Please see the SWSEEL website for full information
about the summer intensive program. SWSEEL requires a separate on-line
application each year. That application will give undergraduate IU students
the option of applying for SSRC awards. Three IU undergraduates won SSRC
awards for study of advanced Russian in summer 2005.
Beck Award (formerly the Chair's Award)
William K. Beck died on Sunday, April 17, 2005, at the age of 62. Mr.
Beck was a 1967 graduate with a Bachelors of Arts degree majoring in Slavic
Languages and Literatures. He was retired from the Defense Intelligence
Agency. Beck was well-known and respected among department faculty and
students for his commitment to undergraduate study of the Russian language.
As Henry Cooper remembers, “He had a clear sense of the importance
of Russian and was committed to helping Americans learn the language well.
Many people acknowledge the importance of knowing a foreign language,
but all too few put their money where their mouth is, as Bill Beck did.”
For the past decade, Beck annually donated funds to support a scholarship,
first named the Chair's Award, more recently the Beck Award. The Beck
scholarship honored the student with junior standing who had made the
most progress in Russian. Ten students have been honored with this award
since its inception. It is our hope that donors will step forward so that
we can continue to offer this scholarship.
Armstrong Award
We are also pleased to announce a future endowment for support of students
in the department at the undergraduate level. John and Elizabeth Armstrong
have made an undergraduate scholarship endowment through the university’s
charitable gift annuity program. This scholarship in memory of their son
and our colleague, Dr. Daniel Armstrong, will support an entering freshman
at Indiana University who plans to enroll in one of the department’s
languages for all four years of undergraduate study. For more information

Edward L. Hutton International Experiences Program (non-departmental)
The
Hutton International Experiences Program is not affiliated with our
department, but most of our students who study abroad apply for and receive
some funds (up to $2,000) through this program. Interested students should
see the URL above or contact the
Office of Overseas Study for more information.
We encourage our students to explore all scholarship options through
the
College of Arts and Sciences undergraduate scholarship web page.
