Housing/Meals
Participants in the Summer Workshop have a choice of living in a university
dormitory, or making their own arrangements to live in town. The dormitory
rooms are in Wilkie Hall. They are air-conditioned singles with a shared bathroom. Wilkie Hall is a twelve minute walk from
classrooms in Ballantine Hall. The Workshop strongly recommends that its
participants live on campus and eat lunch at the language tables, since
this will augment the students' overall experience and increase the opportunity
to speak with instructors, visitors in the cafeteria, and other students.
The per day cost (approximately 60 days in the eight-week program) is $25.00. In addition, Residential Programs charges a $50 application fee
for first time residents, and a $3.50 activity fee. Students who reside
in university housing are required to purchase a minimal number of meal
points to be used in the university dining facility located in Wright Quad. The per day cost of the meal plan for Wilkie residents is $3.00, but this rate will not be sufficient to cover all food costs.
Students generally spend around $20 per day on meals.
The Summer Workshop will set up and staff language tables for noon meals
in Wright Quad dining hall (a ten minute walk from Ballantine Hall) for all
of the participants in the Workshop. Wright Quad has a large salad bar and a food court. The Workshop considers that the language
tables form such a valuable and integral part of the students' cultural
and linguistic experience that it requires those participants who do not
reside in university housing to attend an average of two meals per week
in Wright and to purchase a meal card in the amount of $150.
An application for housing will be mailed to participants after they formally
request to be enrolled in the Summer Workshop.
