East and Central European Languages
June 19 - August 14

The 2009 Summer Workshop will offer the following languages:

  • First year Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian**
  • First year Czech*
  • First year Hungarian
  • First year Macedonian**
  • First year Polish*
  • First year Romanian**
  • First year Slovene*
  • First year Ukrainian

* Due to the change in funding status for these languages, the funding application deadline has been extended. The application for these languages will reopen Monday March 30 and close on April 13, 2009. Qualified graduate students applying for these language courses by that date will receive ACLS funding and can compete for FLAS fellowships.

** Tuition will be waived for graduate students specializing in any field of East European studies.

Courses in the Eastern European program offer 10 hours of undergraduate or graduate credit. The Hungarian course grants 8 hours of credit to undergraduates and 6 hours to graduates. Courses in these languages are equivalent to one year of academic work and meet 20 hours per week. Instruction is Monday to Friday from 9 to 12 with additional morning or afternoon conversation classes. Films and lectures are offered as part of the cultural program. Fellowships are available for graduate students on a competitive basis. Please see the Fellowships tab for more information.

Application deadline for Fellowships is March 20, 2009 (except for Czech, Polish, and Slovene, see note above). Thereafter, rolling admissions.
