Web-based Payments - General Information
Indiana University has been accepting payment cards (credit cards) securely over the Internet for over 5 years. In 2006 Indiana University’s approved web-based payment system processed over 250,000 transactions totaling $76,926,445.05 in sales for such items as continuing education, books and journals, as well as conferences and parking permits/fines.
Accepting payments over the Internet must be done in a secure manner. To do this, Indiana University uses VeriSign Payment Systems. Their servers house the credit card information in an encrypted format and will only make it available to authorized people.
- Indiana University web-based merchants will be using a secure system from VeriSign to process their transactions. The programming interface that IU merchants will be using is called PayFlow Pro. Please feel free to visit VeriSign's web site at http://www.verisign.com.
- Interested departments should contact the e-Commerce Operational team for a needs assessment. A meeting can be arranged by contacting Payment Card Services.
- Departments wishing to accept web-based payments must complete and submit for approval a Departmental Request to Process Internet Payments, a Business Plan, and a Merchant Agreement. In accordance with Policy VI-110, departments will need the approval of their campus Vice Chancellor for Business or their designee.
- Each merchant will need a separate merchant number for Internet transactions. This merchant number will not be the same as for your POS machine.
- Web-based merchants are required to accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.
- Each merchant is required to complete a VeriSign Manager training session with the Office of the Treasurer, Payment Card Services.
- All payments received over the processing network will be automatically settled into Indiana University's general ledger. This is the same process that is used for the POS Terminal (see Accounting for Transactions).
- Each merchant is required to program their web pages to interact with the IPAS-PF servers and complete preliminary testing requirements before releasing your site to the general public.
- There are currently three software choices available for web credit card business - Application Programming Interface (API - Merchant developed), Estore, and TransformEP.
- Merchants opting to use Estore or TransformEP will be required to have an account on Webserve (Indiana University's central World Wide Web server). See the IU Webmaster web page for more information.
