Academic Program
  • IES "French Studies" program* at the IES Center in Montparnasse on the Left Bank
  • Orientation program on-site
  • 20 courses in French language, art history, literature, history and political science taught in French for IES students only
  • French university courses with French students
  • Unpaid internships in business, non-profit organizations, publishing and media

Course Load

  • Program requires enrollment in French language course and a combination of IES center courses AND either a university course or internship.
    • 15 IU credits in combination of 4 IES courses and a 3-credit internship
      OR
    • 15 IU credits in combination of 4 IES courses and a 3-credit French university course
Housing
  • French home with another IES student
  • Limited number of single or double occupancy apartments in a private building

Eligibility

You may apply if you

  • are a student at any Indiana University campus who is making normal academic progress,
  • are in at least your fourth full-time semester of college,
  • are in fourth-semester French (for fall), fifth semester (for spring), and
  • have approximately a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
Complete eligibility criteria and selection criteria are outlined within the Academic Policies and Procedures of the Office of Overseas Study. Selection is based on maturity, seriousness of purpose, and appropriateness of match between program and applicant. Students on disciplinary probation during program period are ineligible.

Application Deadline

IU committee screens applications.

Notification of application status sent electronically within 4 weeks of application deadline.

Estimated Costs

Fall 2010 Semester

  • IU portion of fee: $640
  • IES portion of fee*: $16,375 (tuition, health insurance, housing, breakfast, 2 evening meals per week, orientation)
  • Additional meals: $2,600

*Program fee reflects discounted fee for IU students after benefit of the $1,500 IES Public University Grant.

Airfare, personal expenses, and vacation travel additional.

Initial prepayment of $500 due April 5, 2010 for fall; October for spring.
