Academic Program
  • Orientation and conversational Spanish
  • 15 courses in language, humanities, and social sciences taught in Spanish for IES students only
  • University of Salamanca or Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca course with Spanish students (spring only)
  • Optional unpaid social services internship (spring only) or teaching internship

Course Load

  • Fall program requires enrollment in Spanish language course and IES center courses
    • 16 IU credits
      • 4 credit language course
      • 12 credits in IES courses
  • Spring program requires enrollment in Spanish language course and a combination of IES center courses AND either a university course or internship
    • 16 IU credits in combination of 4 IES courses and a 3-credit internship
    • 16 IU credits in combination of 4 IES courses and a 3-credit University of Salamanca course
  • Rooms in Spanish homes or student apartments
Additional Program Information

You may apply if you

  • are a student at any Indiana University campus who is making normal academic progress,
  • are in at least your fourth full-time semester of college,
  • have taken or are enrolled in at least fourth semester Spanish (for fall program), fifth semester (for spring program), and
  • have attained at least a B average in Spanish, and
  • have approximately a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
Complete eligibility criteria and selection criteria are outlined within the Academic Policies and Procedures of the Office of Overseas Study. Selection is based on maturity, seriousness of purpose, and appropriateness of match between program and applicant. Students on disciplinary probation during program period are not eligible.

IU committee screens applications.

Notification of application status sent electronically within 4 weeks of application deadline.

Estimated Costs

Fall 2010 Semester

  • IU portion of fee: $640
  • IES portion of fee*: $13,450 (tuition, health insurance, homestay room, some meals)
  • Additional meals: $2,160

*Program fee reflects discounted fee for IU students after benefit of the $1,500 IES Public University Grant.

Airfare, personal expenses and vacation travel additional.

Initial prepayment of $500 due April 5, 2010 for fall; October for spring.
