We maintain and create spaces for learning, research, and living. The Office of the Vice President for Capital Planning and Facilities oversees the facilities and grounds for all Indiana University campuses. Together, we are responsible for maintaining, renovating, building, and planning all spaces—both buildings and grounds—on all campuses at Indiana University.
The office is dedicated to creating and maintaining attractive, functional, and sustainable facilities and space on all campuses, with an emphasis on the environment and energy conservation.
The office also serves as a liaison with the state for all capital projects, including the Capital Appropriations Request, the state approval process for capital projects, and the various capital and space utilization reports required by the state.
The offices listed below serve all campuses of Indiana University.
University Architect’s Office
New construction and most renovations are managed through the University Architect’s Office. As project managers, we oversee the initial and detailed design processes as well as the construction process. We also review any design that affects the appearance of Indiana University campuses and assist in the development and maintenance of the campus master plans, in conjunction with the University Landscape Architect and our campus master planners. Our engineering department works with campus physical plants to plan and manage cooling, ventilation, plumbing, lighting, fire protection, utility distribution, and energy management systems.
IU Bloomington Physical Plant
The mission of the IU Bloomington Physical Plant is to operate and maintain a high-quality physical environment to enhance student learning, faculty teaching, and research. This includes building services, building maintenance, campus utilities, and grounds maintenance for the entire campus.
It is the responsibility of the Vice President for Capital Planning and Facilities and its business office to ensure that IU resources dedicated to capital projects are effectively managed. We manage contract processing, project bid processing, payment processing, and budget support.
The Construction Management Division of the University Architect’s Office provides effective project management while extending quality construction services. Critical success factors include commitment to excellence, pursuit of quality, customer satisfaction and timely completion within the given budget. The staff works closely with many University partners, internal design staff, private consulting firms and general contractors. We are proud of the continued historical preservation of our facilities and motivated by this to help implement our University facility standards.
Engineering Services provides technical support to solve problems related to cooling, ventilation, plumbing, lighting, fire protection, utility distribution and energy management. With a staff of licensed engineers and skilled system designers, we strive to create innovative and cost-effective solutions to operational problems as well as support the design and construction efforts for new and renovated University facilities.
University Landscape Architecture
Planning, designing, and maintaining IU’s outdoor spaces are the responsibilities of University Landscape Architecture. This unit works closely with the University Architect’s Office as well as the IU Bloomington Physical Plant and works on projects on all campuses.
University Real Estate
To accommodate space needs, IU regularly acquires (either through purchase or rental agreements) real estate on or near each campus through University Real Estate. This department is also responsible for leasing IU-owned residential properties to faculty, staff, and students.
The Office of Space Planning has been developed with a twofold mission of providing strategic and thoughtful planning as well as providing the efficient management and utilization of both current and prospective property and facilities. The office has primary responsibility for the inventory, utilization, modification, and evaluation of academic and administrative facilities on our campuses and at off-campus facilities owned or leased by the university. We also establish campus space policies and guidelines and monitor space utilization with the goal of ensuring that space is managed strategically, thoughtfully, and with broader institutional needs in mind.
The Office of Sustainability serves as a liaison and partner to academic departments, administrative offices, and operational units to develop a more sustainable campus for IU faculty, staff, and students.
Our technical support team provides a dependable technology environment for the departments of the Office of the Vice President for Capital Planning and Facilities, and other departments in other units, including departments of IU’s chief financial officer, and the departments of the Office of the Vice President for Regional Affairs, Planning, and Policy.
