Notes for Contributors

 

 

            It would save both time and printing costs if in preparing their manuscripts contributors to the JAH would conform to the following simple guidelines.

 

The manuscript should be word-processed throughout double-spaced on one side of a quarto sheet. Please leave a left margin of approximately 1 1/4 inches (about 3.5 cm.), and a bottom margin of approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm.). If handwritten additions and corrections are unavoidable, they should be made in black ink, and so legible that even a typesetter unfamiliar with the language would be able to read them accurately. The name of the author and the title of the article should be presented as follows:

 

Name of author

(Institution) [Optional]

Title of article

 

Bibliographical references should not be given in the text but in footnotes or endnotes. These should be written double-spaced in the same type as the body of the article and numbered consecutively throughout the article with Arabic numerals slightly raised above the line, thus:4.

 

References to books and articles should conform to the following samples.

For books: Author, Title, Title of Series [if applicable]. (City: Publisher, Year)

For articles: Author, "Title”,  Journal, [or editor and Title and other data of book] volume (Year), pagination. Use “p.” or “pp.” only to indicate the specific page from where the quote is taken.

 

To avoid lengthy and repetitious references in the footnotes, this journal prefers, but does not insist on, a list of references placed at the end of the article. The presentation should be of the following pattern: Dow, John. 1987. Title, Title of the Series [if applicable] (City: Publisher, year.) As a guide to format, authors are encouraged to consult recent issues of the Journal of Asian History.

In no circumstances should the title of a book or article be replaced by its English translation, although a translation may be given in square brackets [ ].

 

      Chinese characters, unless given in the text, should be grouped in a glossary arranged in the alphabetic order of the transcription.  There is no need to give the characters for well-known names such as that of the emperors (e.g. Qianlong).

 

        If accepted, your article will be needed not only in a printed but also a disk version, preferably using Word or WordPerfect. Electronically submitted manuscripts are unacceptable.
