Guidelines for Manuscript Submissions

Manuscripts may be submitted as electronic attachments directly to the office of the Journal of Folklore Research at jofr@indiana.edu. All submissions must be in either Microsoft Word (.doc) format or Rich-Text Format (.rtf). The text, quotations, and endnotes should be double-spaced with ample margins for copy-editing and should conform to the fifteenth edition of the Chicago Manual of Style. (Those to whom the Manual is unavailable should consult the pages of this journal or the JFR style sheet.)

Many authors find it helpful to consult recent issues of JFR before submitting to us. In addition, two sample articles are available for downloading:

Kirshenblatt-Gimblett, Barbara. 1989. "Authoring Lives." Journal of Folklore Research 26/2:123-49.

Kwesi, Yankah. 1991. "Power and Circuit of Formal Talk." Journal of Folklore Research 28/1:1-22.

If a manuscript includes notes, endnotes should be used rather than footnotes. Because manuscripts are refereed anonymously, the author’s name and brief contributor information (not exceeding fifty words) should appear on the title page only. All submissions should be accompanied by an abstract of no more than 250 words; the abstract will be published in the journal as well as on the web.

Graphic elements should be submitted in digital form and accompany the initial manuscript submission. Please scan images (including slides) at a resolution of 300 dpi, in TIF format. Size all images to no more than five inches (12.5 cm) horizontally. Low-resolution images (such as those taken from the Internet) should be at least 900 pixels across to ensure print quality.

Although electronic submission is preferred, hard-copy manuscripts may also be submitted in triplicate via post to the following address and should be accompanied by an electronic copy on an IBM PC-formatted diskette:
