1. Disadvantages and Advantages of Hierarchical (or Nested) Designs

Class means versus individual scores analysis-- read the following articles to help you understand the issue and its implications:

Peckham, P.D., Glass, G. V, and Hopkins, K. D. (19??). "The experimental unit in statistical analysis." The Journal of Special Education, 3(4), 337-349.

Blair, R. C. (1986). "Comment on Statistical power with group mean as the unit of analysis." Journal of Educational Statistics, 11(2), 161-169.

2. Assignments:

(1) Review Sections 11.1-11.5, 11.9 in Kirk.

(2) Do questions 3 [part (b) optional), 4 [part (b) optional], 5 [part (b) optional] of Chapter 11.

(3) Read three articles listed above. We will spend the first 15-20 minutes of Wednesdayís class discussing or debating issues outlined in these articles.

(4) Preview Sections 12.1-12.3 in Kirk.
