Workshop Performance of new musical THE WAVE a true story

Indiana University’s Borns Jewish Studies Program, under the auspices of the Lou & Sybil Mervis Chair in Jewish Culture & the Arts, and the IU Department of Theater, Drama, and Contemporary Dance will co-sponsor a series of workshop performances for the new musical “The Wave.” Based on Ron Jones’s famous 1967 social experiment in a Palo Alto high school classroom (for more, see www.thewavehome.com/faq.htm)—the musical continues a long legacy of adaptation in literature, film, and theater as a parable about the dangers of conformity, and of the human urge to give up one’s autonomy in the service of a larger group.

Written by Or Matias

Or Matias is an Israeli composer, pianist, music director, and producer. Since graduating from Juilliard, Or has been featuring cross-genre fusions of various styles, including: classical, jazz, rock, hip-hop, and pop. Or consistently attempts to break the barriers between his musical passions. Most recently, Or has worked with Josh Groban, The Trans Siberian Orchestra, Ingrid Michaelson, violin virtuoso Amadeus Leopold, songstress Rachael Yamagata, and tap dancer Andrew Nemr, alongside countless others. His touring has taken him to New Zealand, Australia (Melbourne Festival), Germany, Kosovo, and all over the US, where he performed to sold-out crowds and wide acclaim. Or produced a single for Josh Groban titled ‘Dust and Ashes’, released in the summer of 2016. Or most recently served as the musical director and conductor for Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 on Broadway.

Or began developing his adaptation of The Wave at the Ucross Artists Residency, and was invited to Indiana University to continue the developmental process. He frequently composes for the radio show “Israel Story” alongside other collaborations in Israel. His musical Wall Between Us, about a relationship between two Israeli and Palestinian men was performed across the United States to wide acclaim. He is currently writing scores for 'Rise to the Tap' featuring Andrew Nemr, and a musical about Ignacy Paderewsky, sponsored by The Adam Mickiewicz Institute of Poland. His scores for dance and theater have been performed at many venues in New York City. Or has served as the music director for the NY branch of Playing for Change – an organization which raises money through concerts to build music facilities for underprivileged kids worldwide.

Directed by Chloe Treat

Chloe Treat is a New York based director and choreographer. Born and raised in the great, if not occasionally problematic state of Texas, she directs and choreographs musicals, plays, operas, outdoor dance rituals and feminist westerns. Chloe's work centers on the curation and creation of modern mythologies, and investigates theater's relationship to communal imiagination. In her work, Chloe collaborates with rural communities and strives to improve female representation on stage and within creative teams. She recently choreographed the American premiere of a Philip Glass opera as well as Santa Fe Opera's (R)evolution of Steve Jobs and was the associate choreographer of Broadway's Natasha Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812. 

Musical Direction by Wiley DeWeese

Wiley DeWeese is a New York-based music director, pianist, and arranger. Recent, in varying capacities: The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical (Lucille Lortel Theater), Amélie (Broadway, Center Theater Group, Berkeley Rep), The Wildness (Ars Nova), First Daughter Suite (Public Theater), Preludes (Lincoln Center Theater - LCT3), Fortress of Solitude (Public Theater). Orchestrations: The Abominables (Children’s Theater Company), The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical. Wiley is a graduate of NYU Steinhardt.

The Wave held its first workshop performances in October 2017 (Act I) and January-February 2018 (Acts I and II) as a joint project of the Indiana University Department of Theatre, Drama and Contemporary Dance and the Robert A. and Sandra S. Borns Jewish Studies Program.

The October 2017 workshop was funded by the Gerald and Dorit Paul Artist-in-Residence Program of the Borns Jewish Studies Program.
