The Robert A. and Sandra S. Borns Jewish Studies Program at Indiana University is pleased to announce a stimulus package of more than $110,000 for incoming freshmen applying to IU Bloomington for Fall 2010, The scholarships are only available to students entering IU Bloomington directly from high school and beginning as freshmen. All scholarship recipients must be full-time students and maintain good scholarly standings as majors or certificate students in Jewish Studies at IU Bloomington through the funded year/s. Students receiving four-year scholarships may use them, after their freshman year, toward a semester/year of study at Hebrew University, Ben-Gurion University, Haifa University, or Tel Aviv University in Israel or at predominantly Jewish Studies academic programs abroad or for full-time, unpaid Jewish Studies-related internships away from IU.
Selection Criteria: Candidates will be considered primarily on the basis of outstanding academic achievement. Extracurricular achievements will also be considered. Students should have a GPA of 3.4 or above. Students committing to pursuing the major in Jewish Studies will be given priority over students who plan to pursue the Jewish Studies certificate.
Important Date: All high school seniors submitting application by January 25, 2010 will be considered for all appropriate scholarships.
Application Procedure: Please submit a: 1) cover letter providing name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, with a signed statement of commitment to pursue either the Jewish Studies major or certificate (or for the Selma Lee Mervis Young Scholarship, the sacred music curriculum either as a Jewish Studies major or as a Jacobs School of Music vocal performance major); 2) a high school transcript; 3) a personal statement that addresses plans for academic work at IU and the specific way that a major or certificate in Jewish Studies will figure in the applicant’s undergraduate education and career plans; 4) a resume detailing extracurricular activities, awards, and honors; and, 5) two letters of recommendation. (At least one of the two recommendations must come from a high school teacher well acquainted with the student’s academic strengths and should focus on the student’s academic abilities.) SAT/ACT scores will also be considered. Applicants need only submit them during the IU application process.
