Amateur radio has a long history at Indiana University. The very first public demonstration of radio in the city of Bloomington was carried out by Professor R. Ramsey in the Physics Department in January 1921. The 1922 Call Book shows that the Physics Department was by then licensed with the call letters 9YAG. By 1925 a radio club was organized, and by 1930 it had a station with the call letters W9IU. Some time later the call K9UAN was assigned. In 1960 the station was moved to the Indiana Memorial Union at the center of campus. Two years later the present call letters K9IU were assigned to the club station. It has been active for many Field Day and campus functions over the years, and student members have made many contacts around the world, including an interesting one with the late King Hussein of Jordan.
The K9IU ARC membership includes students, faculty and staff of Indiana University, as well as other interested local hams. In addition, the club recently voted to establish Subscriber Memberships in response to interest expressed by alumni in continuing to support the club. Because finances are always marginal, this support is greatly appreciated. If you would like to become a subscriber member, please send your check ($15 minimum per year, same as local member dues) made out to:
IU Amateur Radio Club
Indiana Memorial Union, Room 677
900 E. 7th St.
Bloomington, IN 47405-3905
The club also needs to upgrade equipment periodically, and if you would like to contribute a significant amount toward these purposes, please contact the club's faculty adviser by e-mail (email@example.com). For example, we greatly appreciate the upgrade to a newer 2-meter repeater and controller made possible in the spring 1999 by equipment and financial donations by the Monroe County Repeater Association, and by James Kapphahn, Mike and Janee Aronoff, John Sanders, Chuck Hagen, and Dan Miller.
The Indiana University K9IU Amateur Radio Club provides a service to the university and Bloomington community.
