We need to do some recruiting.. Licensed people and unlicensed alike.
I'm going to throw out some ideas.. I don't expect all of them to stick (nor do I think they are all "good" ideas - just throwing stuff out to start a conversation). Whatever we do, we should do it quickly and soon while the beginning of the school year is still here and produce some traction before people get busy with finals and projects.
Here it goes:
Theme? We should have some kind of theme around the call out event. Make it an "event" to give people a good reason to show up (instead of just another meeting). My thoughts for a call out theme would be "Not your grandfather's radio anymore.." - focus on the new technology behind amateur radio (digital modes, VoIP, computer control and logging, etc). Attract the true geeks that are out there :)
Demonstrations? There are a lot of things we -can- demonstrate, but I would advise against trying to show it all off to avoid overwhelming people (both visitors and us as demonstrators). Obviously there are logistical issues around some of these demonstrations but they may be worth it. That all said, some of the demonstrations we might consider could be:
HF SSB contacts
HF PSK31 contacts (waterfall is always cool)
Satellite operations (even without RX/TX, showing a sat tracker on a laptop could be cool)
IRLP/Echolink contacts (have one person on an iPhone client and another person on a radio)
2m repeater contacts of course
APRS (can we get a VX-8R to show off the GPS?)
School club roundup? With SCR coming up the week of Oct 18th we have an opportunity to do some HF demonstrations. Would be a good event to discuss HF contesting.
Outdoor setup? We could setup the 5BTV in dunn meadow and have our callout event there. Would need to coordinate with IMU to make sure we don't conflict with other events, and reserve a room inside in case of rain (advertise the "in case of rain" location on the flyers). I have a battery good enough to run a whole operation for the duration of the event.
Indoor setup? We could do a meeting in one of the IMU rooms, powerpoint showing off all of the things that we do (and can do), then take people up to the shack to show off..
Need to emphasize public service somehow.. Maybe a flyer talking about some of the events that we assist with to be passed out to those who stop by. Make it known that we need more licensed people involved to help!
We would need to have general information about amateur radio and the exam available to hand out and take home. Does the ARRL provide material like this?
Advertising the event: Flyers!! everywhere.. This will take some effort. Are there other ways we can get the word out for free? Can we get a spot on WIUX?
Retention: we need a clipboard sheet that people can "sign up" for further information. If they want to join on the spot we should make that possible too, but focus on following-up with the list of people to complete their membership later. Maybe have some kind of form for people who would be interested in a class to get their license (or a ham cram day).
Cookies! Who wouldn't want to join a club that hands out cookies?!
Any other thoughts/ideas? I'm happy to help with such an event, but I won't be able to do this kind of thing alone.. And yet I'm afraid we need to do some hard core recruiting soon or else the club membership will dwindle off and cease to exist.
