I am interested in the role of mate choice in speciation. Is sexual selection or reproductive timing and shifts in migration behavior the driving force of the speciation of the dark-eyed junco? I believe the dark-eyed junco is a good model organism for these studies, because migratory species exhibit an interesting case of speciation. As migratory populations may winter together and breed separately, they can neither be considered wholly allopatric or sympatric. I am interested in this phenomenon of ‘heteropatry’.
