The research in the Caulton group centers around the chemistry of 'designed' transition metal complexes to cleave and modify certain chemical bonds that might ordinarily be considered inert or unreactive. Examples include C-H, C-C, C-F and also the multiple bonds S=O, N=O, C=C. Efforts are also being made to break out of the limitations of the '18 electron' rule of organometallic chemistry to use radical complexes for their unique reactivity.
