Internships
For complete instructions on how to proceed with an internship, please download and print the internship manual which outlines all procedures.
Brief Overview:
An internship is identified as a relevant work experience (frequently unpaid), which provides qualifications necessary for future employment. Certain criteria must be met before a student can be authorized to register for academic credit. In addition, fitness specialist and sport marketing and management majors, for whom the internship is a mandatory component of their academic programs, must see an academic advisor for an Eligibility Sheet before scheduling a meeting with the department internship coordinator. Students from all programs must obtain the following information before scheduling this appointment:
- Verification of the student’s acceptance
from the internship site. This must be written in the form of a letter
or an e-mail addressed to:
- A detailed job description
- Name, title, e-mail address and phone number of the internship supervisor
- Name and mailing address of the internship agency
- Start and finish dates for the internship
- Approximate number of total hours the student will work
Susan Simmons, Internship Coordinator
Kinesiology Career Center, HPER 112
Indiana University
Bloomington, IN 47405
suscrowe@indiana.edu
When the student has obtained the necessary information, an appointment should be scheduled on the appointment sheet outside the Career Center in Student Services, HPER 112. Once the information is approved by Susan Simmons, the student and supervisor will complete an Internship Agreement Form & Internship Expectations Form to be kept in HPER records with a copy in the student's file at the Career Center . The student will then be authorized to register for the internship. Registration is necessary as the internship is considered a class with a specific section number. Students must agree to complete 50 hours of work experience for each academic credit hour (i.e. 3 credit hours equals a minimum 150 hours of experience). Participation hours required for some experiences exceed the minimum.
Internship Evaluations
Prior to the awarding of a grade for the internship experience, evaluation forms from both the supervisor and the student must be completed and returned to the Career Center at midterm and approximately one week before the end of the internship. The student must also complete an exit interview with Susan Simmons at the end of the internship experience. The grade for the internship is S/F rather than a letter value.
