Dr. Tim Mickleborough:
Dietary
supplementation with fish oil reduces the airway constriction caused
by Exercise-Induced Asthma (EIA)
forindividuals suffering from mild
to moderate cases.
EIA is more clearly linked to high-salt diet. Modifying diet has potential to modify a disease state.

Sport Communication Textbook -- In conjunction with Human Kinetics, Dr. Paul Pedersen, Dr. Kimberly Miloch, and Dr. Pamela Laucella, members of the sport communication and sport marketing and management faculty, will publish Strategic Sport Communication in May of 2007. The textbook is the first to define and examine the breadth and scope of sport communication. Using a new conceptualization of the field called the Strategic Sport Communication Model, the book offers a broad overview of the role of communication in sport management within organizations, with external clients, and with the media. Job opportunities within the sport communication area are also emphasized.
Counsilman Center Invited for Research Opportunity -- The Center was asked to provide a service to the World Masters Swimming community by being present at the XI FINA Masters World Championship to obtain and provide feedback to competitors. By doing so, an unparalleled opportunity to obtain additional data on the biological markers of aging in a highly active population was presented. Work begun at the USMS Nationals in Indianapolis was broadened to include additional markers of aging, in particular a better assessment of muscle mass. The expansion of the project will allow sufficient numbers in the various age and sex categories to allow appropriate statistical comparisons of the pertinent variables.

He emphasized the many ways intercollegiate athletics can advance the mission of an institution.
Jogging
and Knee Pain -- Knees can be compared to tires, said John
Schrader, alicensed athletic trainer and clinical professor in IU
Bloomington's Department of Kinesiology. The cartilage that
cushions the bones wears away, and it cannot be restored without
experimental surgical procedures. Unlike tires, knees don't come
with known mileage limits. Full

Fish oil shown to reduce airway inflammation caused by exercise induced asthma -- Several media outlets wrote about Tim Mickleborough’s research and the effect of fish oil on exercise-induced asthma:
- Reuters, an international news service
- United Press International
- Medscape from WebMD
- NBC National News prepared a piece that was distributed to affiliates nationwide, including KSDK in St. Louis
- NBC5 in Chicago
"People suffering from exercise-induced asthma were able to reduce their symptoms below the threshold used to diagnose the disease by eating a diet supplemented with fish oil, according to new research findings from Indiana University reported in the January issue of the journal Chest.
The special diet reduced narrowing of the patient's airway and enabled the person to use less asthma medication, the study showed. These and related research findings by exercise physiologist Timothy D. Mickleborough offer the prospect of combining dietary supplementation with reduced medication in a treatment that could be at least as beneficial as either in isolation." Full Story
