Welcome to the Legacy of Graham

The Legacy of Graham is the IU Dance Theater's annual faculty and guest artist concert celebrating modern dance matriarch and innovator of the twentieth century, Martha Graham. This concert features an historic restaging of Graham's Panorama from 1935. This restaging was funded through the American Masterpieces: Dance - College Component, a project of Dance/USA and the National Endowment for the Arts. Indiana University Dance Theater presents: The Legacy of Graham, produced by the IU Departments of Kinesiology and Theatre and Drama featuring:

  • Martha Graham’s Panorama,
  • Paul Taylor’s Aureole and 3 Epitaphs,
  • and works by IU Faculty from Kinesiology, and African American and African Diaspora Studies

Performance is at the Ruth N. Halls Theatre, 275 N. Jordan Avenue, Bloomington.

Selene Carter, visiting lecturer in the IU contemporary dance program and dance historian in the department of kinesiology, will discuss American modern dance pioneer Martha Graham’s collaborations with contemporary visual artists such as Isamu Noguchi and Alexander Calder. The talk will include a short demonstration of Graham’s modern dance technique and the evolution of her choreographic ideas.

Celebrate three masters of American modern dance; Martha Graham, Paul Taylor and Bill T. Jones, whose work will be performed in Bloomington in 2010. Distinctive and groundbreaking, these artists are pioneers of modern dance. IU Contemporary Dance Faculty, and Dance Historian Selene Carter hosts each screening.
