Undergraduate Programs
Contemporary Dance
From September 11-29, the New York City-based modern dance group, Ben Munisteri Dance Projects, will be in residence in the Contemporary Dance Program in the Department of Kinesiology. Dance faculty members Gwendolyn Hamm, Laura Poole, and Elizabeth Shea received a $40,000 grant from the university’s New Frontiers in the Arts and Humanities program to bring the company to Bloomington. While in residency, Mr. Munisteri will begin work on a new piece of choreography, Terra Nova, which will feature use of motion capture technology provided by the department’s Ergonomics Laboratory. Mr. Munisteri will also work with the department’s modern dance majors, teaching contemporary dance technique and setting a repertory work on the students. University and community members can view Mr. Munisteri’s work at an open house on Friday September 29 at 2:00p in the HPER Dance Studio (HPER 161). This residency promises to be a productive collaboration between dance, science, and technology.
The Department of Kinesiology offers seven undergraduate
majors. An undergraduate Bachelor of Science major for the preparation
of teachers and coaches leads to a Standard Teaching Certificate for
K-12. Majors in athletic training, exercise science, fitness specialist,
sport communication, and sport marketing and management also lead to
the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology.
The athletic training, exercise science, fitness specialist, sport communication,
and sport marketing and management programs are interdisciplinary, providing
course work in related subject matter as well as appropriate Kinesiology courses.
The athletic training major leads to certification by the Board of Certification (BOC). Students who major in the area
of fitness will take course work leading to certification by the American College
of Sports Medicine.
The undergraduate teacher preparation curriculum is a combination of courses
in teaching methodology and the human movement sciences. Professional and technical
instruction is given in teaching and coaching the various sports, activities,
and dance that are commonly taught in public schools with the addition of appropriate
theoretical academic background.
The major in dance is a unique approach to dance education that combines rigorous technical training and artistic development with a strong academic curriculum.
