-- Institute for Sex Research, Inc. (ISR), incorporated April 8, 1947,
with Dr. Alfred Kinsey as Director.
-- All project materials transferred to ISR by deed for $1.00.
-- ISR housed in Biology Hall (Swain Hall East).
1948
-- Publication of Sexual Behavior in the Human Male (W.B. Saunders)
on January 5th.
1950
-- ISR moved to Wylie Hall.
-- American Statistical Association sent review committee to ISR.
-- U.S. Customs in New York City seized material. (Resolved in 1957 federal
court case.)
1953
-- Publication of Sexual Behavior in the Human Female (W.B. Saunders)
on September 14th.
1955
-- ISR moved to Jordan Hall.
1956
-- Television interview taped with Dr. Kinsey for NBC broadcast on March
20th.
-- Dr. Kinsey interviewed his last 2 subjects. Altogether he personally
took 7985 of the approximately 18,000 sex histories gathered by the research
team.
-- Death of Dr. Kinsey on August 25th at age 62.
-- Dr. Paul Gebhard, a Harvard-trained
anthropologist and key member of Kinsey's research team, appointed executive
director and Dr. Wardell Pomeroy named director of field research.
1957
-- U.S. v. 31 Photographs case settled by U.S. federal court
in the Institute's favor; the decision gave the Institute the right to
import erotic/pornographic materials for research purposes.
-- First grant received from the National Institute of Mental Health.
1958
-- Publication of Pregnancy, Birth, and Abortion (Harper/Hoeber).
1963
-- Pomeroy resigns. Gebhard assumes directorship of the Institute.
-- By this year, a total of 18,216 sex histories had been taken through
use of the interview devised by Kinsey.
1965
-- Publication of Sex Offenders: An Analysis of Types (Harper/Hoeber).
1967
-- ISR began move to Morrison Hall; some research staff remained at Poplars.
1970
-- Information Services Department established to provide reference and
referral information.
-- First Summer Training Program held in July.
1976
-- Publication of Sexual Nomenclature: A Thesaurus (G.K. Hall).
1978
-- Publication of Homosexualities: A Study of Diversity Among Men
and Women (Simon & Schuster).
1981
-- The Institute for Sex Research renamed "The Kinsey Institute for Sex
Research, Inc." at a conference commemorating the 25th anniversary of
Dr. Kinsey's death.
1982
-- Retirement of Dr. Gebhard as Director.
-- Dr. June Reinisch, a psychologist trained
at Columbia University, appointed Director.
-- The Institute's name changed to "The Kinsey Institute for Research
in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction, Inc." to reflect broadened research
mission.
-- All Institute departments were housed in Morrison Hall.
1984-93
-- During this period, "The Kinsey Report," an internationally syndicated
newspaper column, disseminated research-based information to the general
public.
1987
-- Publication of Masculinity/Femininity (Oxford University Press),
inaugural volume in "The Kinsey Institute Series."
1989
-- Publication of Sex and Morality in the U.S. (Wesleyan University
Press).
1990
-- Publication of The Kinsey Institute New Report on Sex: What You
Must Know to be Sexually Literate (St. Martin's Press), the first
Institute publication written for the general public.
-- First exhibition (and catalog) of the art collection, Selections
from the Collections of The Kinsey Institute.
1993
-- Retirement of Dr. Reinisch as Director.
-- Appointment of Dr. Stephanie Sanders
as Interim Director.

-- Gopher information server for sexuality research inaugurated.

-- John Bancroft, M.D. appointed as the Institute's

-- Establishment of the Kinsey Institute clinics

was made available on the Internet.

hosted by the Institute.
