The research file consists of a wide array of articles, news clippings, and notes that deal with sexuality, gender, and reproduction. Particular emphasis is on East Asia with many articles and research specific to China. However, some of the research file is devoted to the issues of sexuality in the United States, with a large file consisting of articles relating to the evolving story of AIDS in the U.S. (1982-1990s). Items in the research file generally fall into the following categories: prostitution, koro, homosexuality, AIDS/STDs, and birth control/family planning. Many of the research file items are from scholarly Chinese medical journals, American anthropological, medical, psychological, and sex journals, magazines such as the Far Eastern Economic Review, and major newspapers such as China Daily and the New York Times. Some materials are in foreign languages, including Chinese, Dutch, French, German, and Italian.
