The School of Fine Arts Gallery and The Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction at Indiana University are pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition Feminine Persuasion. This exhibit opens Friday, February 14 and continues through Friday, March 14, 2003.
An opening reception will be held on Friday, February 14 from 7:00- 9:00 PM in the SoFA Gallery at Indiana University. At 5:30 PM the public is invited to attend an artist's talk by photographer Renee Cox, to be held in Fine Arts 015.
Feminine Persuasion is part of a yearlong celebration of the 50th anniversary of the publication of the groundbreaking volume, Sexual Behavior in the Human Female, by noted sexologist Alfred C. Kinsey and his research colleagues at Indiana University. The exhibit will contain three companion exhibitions. Feminine Persuasion: Women Artists in the Kinsey Institute Collection will contain historical and contemporary works by women artists that have been donated to the Kinsey Institute over more than fifty years. Feminine Persuasion: The Male Perspective will feature artwork by men, also taken from the Kinsey Institute collection, that depicts women's sexuality from a variety of viewpoints. Feminine Persuasion: Contemporary Women's Sexualities will contain works on loan from six women artists who are exploring issues related to female sexuality through their work in a variety of media.
The art featured in the show presents diverse views of female sexuality from the perspective of female and male artists from various time periods. Artists who are represented in the Kinsey Institute collection include Mariette Pathy Allen, Judy Dater, Leonor Fini, Eric Godal, Katsushika Hokusai, Douglas Kirkland, Marcantonio Raimondi, clara Tice, Joel-Peter Witkin, Frank Yamrus, and others. Artwork will also be borrowed directly from the artists or private collections. This portion of the exhibition will feature paintings, photographs, sculptures, and video by contemporary artists Ghada Amer, Patti Chang, Renee Cox, Nancy Davidson, Nicole Eisenman, and Laura Letinsky.
The exhibit will address a variety of topics about sex and sexuality ranging from adolescence and body development to aging. Additional themes, including birth, reproduction, body image and appearance, sexual pleasure and desire will be represented by selected works. Although the artists in the exhibition approach sexuality from many perspectives, the female expression of sexuality is the overall theme.
Feminine Persuastion, the book of the exhibition, is now available through Indiana University Press. It contains essays by the curators, Betsy Stirratt, Director of the School of Fine Arts Gallery, and Catherine Johnson, Curator at the Kinsey Institute; Associate Professor of Art Jean Robertson, Ph.D., at Herron School of Art, Indianapolis; and former Kinsey Institute Director June Machover Reinisch, PhD.
